'Celestial Squid' - A Diamond Spice poem

Welcome back to the world of Diamond Spice!
This is the second of a collection of poems I'd like to share with you, as a sneak peek into some of the fantastical goings-on in my book.

This one is titled 'Celestial Squid':

***
Have you ever witnessed
The immensity
Of a Celestial Squid?
Coat of clammy jelly porcelain
Alien skin
Cold and damp, despite eons
Baked betwixt stars
Radiation hazed
Star sick tranquil predator
With lidless eyes
Leviathan of mountain-crushing size
Unravelled across the stratosphere
A shimmering mirage
Eclipse the moon
A family;
Pulsing pod
Of briny gods
Gobbling up planetoids like plankton

Excerpt from the book:
"As he walked back, swinging the Turtleroots to dislodge the worst of the
muck, a pod of Celestial Squid pulsed overhead, filling the air with ozone scent, their long shadows cast far out into space by the rising sun. They were so much bigger than houses; bigger than mountains even but completely uninterested in the world below and no one in living memory remembered ever seeing one touch ground.
It was customary for boys to check their fly when squids were spotted
overhead. The old rumour went: If a ‘low-flying’ zipper was noticed, the squids will squirt ink in embarrassment, covering anyone below. 'You’ll make the squid blush' was the polite way to notify someone of their undesirable wardrobe situation. Khulani ran his fingers over the front of his trousers, just to make sure."

For poetry on other extraordinary creatures, including wampus cats, fuzzy lizards and a monstrous vacuum-incinerator called ‘The Vac’, please stay tuned.

The full-length novel is chock-full of these and more; hippogryphs, magic potions, dragons and even drunken flying-carpet riding.
Please check out Diamond Spice, now available. It’ll crack your mind wide open.
